You Choose

I recently discovered the ‘You Choose’ series of children’s books. Rather than a particular story that has characters and a beginning, middle and end to it, ‘You Choose ‘doesn’t. It invites the reader to choose and become part of the story. Each page is filled with pictures and invites you to choose where you would choose to go on holiday, or what you would choose to eat, or which hat you would choose to wear. Whenever I use it, the children I am with love it and always engage with choosing what they want.

I wonder what you would choose given a choice of food, or holiday destinations, or musicals to go and see. We make choices everyday from what to wear to what we eat and drink. Thankfully God doesn’t choose us based on what we wear or what we eat. God looks at what we are like from the inside and our hearts desires rather than the outward appearance.

In the Bible the prophet Samuel is tasked with finding a new King to replace Saul. God directs him to a particular family and he goes walks past each of the brothers, but none of them are the person God has chosen to be King. Samuel asks the father if there are any other brothers, and there is one who is out looking after the sheep. He is the teenager of the family. Yet this is who God chose to be King. God choose the unexpected in choosing the youngest son. He wasn’t the perfect King, but his heart was pointed towards God.

As Christians we believe that God has chosen us. Each one of us, I believe is made in God’s image, and he wants us to be part of their family, but it is a choice. We can choose to be part of that or choose not to be. So next time you are choosing what take away to have or which jumper to wear, remember that God has chosen you to be part of his family!
