Wisdom to live by

Where do you seek wisdom from? The newsletter which comes with my weekly vegetable delivery is entitled ‘Wisdom to live by’ and from it I learn about the lives of those who grow my food and the environmental impact of farming. There are also handy recipes on the back so I know what to do with the fennel, celeriac and kohlrabi and other exotic vegetables I sometimes find in the box.

At Evensong yesterday we heard a reading from Wisdom – a book in the Apocrypha – which is not included in many Bibles. Our reading encouraged us to seek wisdom – personified as a beautiful woman - ‘radiant and unfading’. She is easily discerned by those who love her. God does not hide wisdom from us – but maybe we don’t always seek wisdom out. In poetic and lovely language these verses from the book of Wisdom express how we might seek wisdom and the result of this – coming nearer to God.

The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction, and concern for instruction is love of her,and love of her is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality, and immortality brings one near to God;so the desire for wisdom leads to a kingdom.

Wisdom 6:17-20

This week how and where will you look for wisdom and come nearer to God?

Give me, Lord God,

a mind to know you,

diligence to seek you,

wisdom to find you,

a life to please you,

perseverance to wait faithfully for you, and

the trust that will finally embrace you…

Prayer of St Thomas Aquinas
