Because we so badly need truth. As our days get steadily darker, we have seen in so many different contexts, so many different areas of public life, how truth is regarded as too difficult, too inconvenient, too bold. So instead we are given opinions. And then perhaps lies: little lies, which then grow bigger until truth is almost eclipsed.
We need to listen to all who tell the truth: those who will not let their voices be dismissed. They are vital to any society. Despite every discouragement, like our prophets they will at last be heard.
We need to honour our own call to live by the truth. This is for everyone, and it is never easy. We depend upon the help of all our saints, past and present. We find examples within our families. We can derive strength from our church communities, as we learn from one another how to be honest and faithful. In this way, like individual brush strokes of paint on a canvas, we contribute to a bigger, beautiful picture, which reflects God’s meaning and purpose.
Most of all we need the truth that is Christ. Together with the good news of his presence and power amongst us.
Jesus said. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life”. (John 14:6)
