Countless numbers of fans are still coming to terms with the news that after nearly 9 years as manager of Liverpool FC Jürgen Klopp is to retire. He follows an impressive line of forerunners from the great Bill Shankly to Kenny Dalglish. However, Klopp retains the title of the most successful Liverpool FC manager of all time. Now that’s not a bad accolade at all.
But that’s not the end of the story. Reports about Klopp from players and fans alike rank him highly in terms of his good influence on others. His passion and his realistic and pragmatic approach together with his common sense and Christian faith make him likable and well respected on and off the pitch. He’ll leave quite a legacy which is reflected in Liverpool’s compliment of making him an honorary Scouser.
It made me think. All of us influence those around us, and whilst we look to others for their lead and example there’s no doubt that how we live, what we do and say will shape outcomes and affect others. This can seem a daunting task but we get encouragement from those around us, and we gain inspiration and purpose from the best and greatest influence of all – Jesus. And like many who have gone before us, we too play our part – perhaps not in the beautiful game, but certainly in this wonderful gift of life.
God of patient care and gentle influence.
Inspire us to live life in ways
that show your love to others,
and help shape this world in ways that bring joy
and hope to all.
To the glory to your name. Amen.
