In the Beginning...

Beginnings are interesting times. Whether it is a new baby, a change of government, a different job, another sporting event, or even a new church floor, we all get excited by what seems to be a fresh start. Beginnings offer us an escape from the familiar, a chance to glimpse unrealised possibilities, hope.

But of course, as in the case of our church reordering, all vital new beginnings are based upon careful preparation, often unseen and unrecognised. They arise, not so much ‘out of the blue’, but after thought and pre-existing strategy. Often God’s.

Our Bible recognises this. Humankind doesn’t stride upon the scene like an actor walking upon an empty stage. According to the first wise story about our origins, God creates our world, enjoying himself for five days before extending the process to include Adam and Eve.

And Sunday is like this too. It is a natural day upon which to celebrate beginnings. We remember Jesus rising from the dead, showing us the shape of a fresh creation, sharing his joy. The suffering of the past is not banished, but is woven mysteriously into something new, offered to every one of us. We can start again. A new week, a new hope never to be defeated.

Lord, we pray your blessing

Upon our Sundays

And upon these weeks of summer.

May they offer each one of us

The new beginning which we seek

Within your inexhaustible love and mercy.

Amen.
