I’ve been reminded this week how many times we have make choices. Choosing things, determines our days.
This week, many young people received A level results, which gave them choices, whether it was a choice of a university/college or apprenticeship or the next step being to take a job.
At the other end of life’s cycle, I’m journeying with my dad and there are, many choices, both with and for dad, as we walk the road with Alzheimers.
Alongside the big decisions with big consequences we know every day brings the need for us to choose: Which train shall I catch? Shall I take an umbrella? What to buy for supper? Shall I say sorry? Do I choose to forgive? Shall I believe today?
Choices, choices, choices.
Life is made up of things within our control and much that isn’t. Do we live in fear of what is to come or blame others for what is happening to us or do we see our lives as a means of taking responsibility for the choices we can make and at the same time submitting to the love, grave and wisdom of God who is at work in and through us and our world.
It is in essence of the life of faith. It is the road we travel.
Mark preached on Sunday about the wisdom of Solomon. (listen to it https://www.stpeterschurch.uk.com/watch)
King Solomon was king of Israel and written about in the old testament.
Mark talked about him having a desire to be more a king of policy rather the king of war. He wanted to be different to the kings that came before him and to seek to lead in a different way.
And he realised his need as he asks God for wisdom. And God answered his prayer. Solomon was known for his wisdom.
Wisdom is not the property of just those who we think deserve it due to the length and experience of life. But the Hebrew interpretation of wisdom is to have a “God-listening heart”
Information and knowledge are important but the transforming power to attain wisdom is the God listening heart.
As we pray for each other making choices across this coming week, whether those with global influence, national leadership or each of us choosing for ourselves and those we love
We pray:
Lord we pray for wisdom; a God-listening heart,
that we hear the whisper of your challenge,
feel the nudge of your grace,
and glimpse the glimmers of your love.
Amen
