There’s something about jazz. It just works for me. I find some contemporary compositions in modern music too complex to grapple with, and whilst I appreciate the vast array of wonderful classical music, jazz still tops the bill.
I think it must be to do with a successful mix of musical freedom within a clear structure that resonates with me. Jazz seems to afford a freedom of expression and improvisations that sit comfortably within parameters of rhythm and refrain.
I often think the Christian life is like this. God places us in contexts where the familiar can become clear structures that support the freedom of expression in the living out of our faith. The sure foundations of God’s values and character allow us scope to grow creatively and with flourish. Perhaps tentatively, but each improvised step adding to the tone and texture of the music we make.
God of form and flair,
hold us firm in the safe refuge of your care,
and tune us to the creative freedom of your life-giving Spirit.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
