Heritage Open Day

Saturday 14 September 2024 11am - 3pm

There is a lot going on at St Peter's for Heritage Open Days this year.  Visit us to meet some of the key characters from St Peter's history, climb the bell tower, play on the bouncy castle, take part in crafts, activities and trails and enjoy refreshments including sausage / bacon baps, tea / coffee and cake, and learn about the history of St Peter's through our new QR code trail.

Costumed Enactments

We are delighted to welcome actors from Breakaway Theatre Company who will perform costume enactments featuring key characters from St Peter's history.  These start at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm and will last approximately 30 minutes.  This is suitable for all ages.

Tower Tours

This is one of the few times in the year when the church tower is open to visitor. The church tower is the highest point in St Albans and on a clear day it is possible to see Canary Wharf and the Wembley Arches.

There will be 3 guided tower tours taking place at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm.  Numbers are limited on each of these.

To book your place please go to church from 11am on Saturday 14th September and sign up for one of the tours.

Visitors will be able to;

  • see what's up the tower

  • learn about the 400 year old art of English Change Ringing

  • experience a bell ringing demonstration

  • view the bells

  • admire the birds eye view of St Albans (and further afield) from the church roof (subject to weather and other considerations)

  • be invited to return to the tower if they are interested in learning to ring

Please note that children should be accompanied by an adult and children under 9 years old are not able to access the roof.

Children

There will be a bouncy castle in the churchyard, craft activities, trails and quizzes for children to enjoy and the chance to design your own stained-glass window.  Children will enjoy meeting the historical characters and finding out more about their impact on St Peter's church.

Refreshments

Tea, coffee, cake and Sausage or bacon baps will be available in the church.

QR Code Trail

Walk round the church and use QR codes to access more information about the features in church, stained glass windows, history, characters and stories from St Peter's which has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years and one of the pilgrim churches.
