The Font and the Nave Altar

In front of you is the font - an hexagonal structure with a bowl in the centre. This is the place in the church where baptisms take place.  The font dates from the mid-1800s and has been moved several times.  St Peter’s has two altars – one at the East end of the church called the high altar and another in the centre of the building called the nave altar. You can see the nave altar ahead of you.  Christians use the altar in the core ceremony of Christianity – the communion – in which bread is broken and distributed with wine to those present at the communion service. This takes place four times per week at St Peter’s.
