Heritage Information Points

Heritage Walk around St Peter’s Church and Churchyard

Discover the rich history of St Peter’s of over 1100 years. Find out about the royal connections with the church, the disasters and successes, the wars and the peaceful times, the faithful witness and the court cases.

You are standing in one of the greater churches in the land, full of history and the home of many generations of worshipping Christians. We will take you back to the modest chapel which stood on the site, built as one of the gateway churches to St Albans, welcoming pilgrims visiting the shrine of St Alban, the first English martyr.

At each of the 12 Information Points shown on the plan below, you will find a sign with a QR code. Scan the QR code with your phone to read about the bits of St Peter’s history which are relevant at that point. Often the page it takes you to will link to more in-depth information in case you want it, and also some pages written especially for children.
